AI robot defeats players in table tennis

A robot powered by artificial intelligence has achieved a remarkable milestone by defeating skilled table tennis players in competitive matches. This development is being seen as a major breakthrough in human-machine interaction within fast-paced sports.

The robotic system, named “S,” was developed by Sony AI and demonstrated impressive performance against a top-level player. It managed to win three out of five matches, highlighting its growing capabilities in real-time decision-making.

However, the robot faced challenges when competing against two professional players, where it could not secure victories. Despite this, researchers consider its overall performance a significant achievement in robotics and AI integration.

Table tennis is known for its rapid gameplay and requires quick reflexes, precision, and strategic thinking. The robot’s ability to respond swiftly and execute complex shots makes this advancement particularly noteworthy.

During the matches, the robot successfully returned difficult shots and even performed high-speed backspin shots. One professional player described such moves as nearly impossible for machines until now.

The findings of this project were published in the journal Nature, where researchers explained that the robot’s skills are continuously improving through advanced learning systems and real-match experience.

Unlike earlier AI systems tested in board games like chess, this robot operates in a dynamic physical environment. Using multiple cameras instead of human-like vision, it tracks the ball’s movement and spin with high accuracy.
